I want Win10. Reinstall and still want to keep all my data?

I want to reinstall Win10 because my laptop is always stuck and jerky.

I don't want to re-download all of my data, programs and games.

Can I restore it with a system image or do I have to download everything again?

Bi

Either… Or.

Back up all your data and also your game folder / program folder (installation location AND storage location for config stories and saves).

Reinstall Windows completely.

Then copy the data back, reinstall the games / programs (in exactly the same folder as on the old Windows) and then copy the saved game folder to the new Windows.

It only makes sense images documents videos music to backup the rest you have to do again.

Reinstall Windows.

A new installation does not necessarily bring you something if your system jerky. Just see that you clean up your system.

Uninstall software that you no longer need, delete old temporary files and clean up the autostart - you have much more of that.

Otherwise, the hard drives in Lappys usually break after 3 - 5. If it is the age, consider buying a new record.

What if the "Config Stories" are in the LocalMachine branch of the registry? Then nothing works according to this method.

Files on the hard disk do not slow down the computer. They can't produce a jerk in this way.

Te

Of course, a full, fragmented disk is slower than a defragmented blank disk.

If you have created a system image after installing Windows and all programs, you only need to back up your data. You can then play back the system image and copy the data back into your user folder.

If you don't have a suitable system image, you can't use one for recovery.

Lagging and jerking will probably not be resolved by reinstalling. Windows has not become "old", but the stuttering is probably due to the hardware. It doesn't change there.

pi

You are absolutely right: a full and fragmented fat plate is slow. On the one hand, you didn't write anything about defragmenting, but about deleting the temporary files. On the other hand, the FS does not complain about a slow hard disk, but generally about "lagging". This can also mean that a game does not run at the desired frame rate.

Deleting temporary files only affects the computer's working speed if the disk is 98% -100% full.

Bi

Okay… You have to show me these games.

Otherwise, it remains with the new installation with a possible download. But it doesn't matter, since all important data is already backed up.

Restoring a system image that is probably not available, including any errors, does nothing from the start.

Te

I don't know if you really read what I wrote. He should generally clean up his system instead of doing a new installation. Something like that was done at the time of XP or Vista - with Win 10 this is no longer necessary.

In a classic Win10 installation, all data, ie. Your files and installed programs are deleted.

If you perform a Win10 recovery with the option: "Keep my own files", the installed apps and programs will be deleted, but afterwards you have installed a new Win10 that runs smoothly and your data is still available.
The deleted programs must then be reinstalled again.

For Win10 recovery:
Go to Settings> Update and Security> Links: Recovery>
Reset this PC: Let's go> Select the "Keep my files" option, see

Yes but what if my Windows still jerky? I have tried everything but it doesn't help, I have nothing left to do but reinstall my Win10 and download my 400GB programs / games again =

Te

Look for the reason for this - with Lappys this is usually the load on the hard drive. Look in the task manager what slows down your system.
