I was just about to charge my laptop because I'm traveling tomorrow, but I'm told "AC power is not charging". As you can see on the screenshot, however, the battery icon shows the power cable, which you only see when the laptop is connected to the power supply. Does anyone know what that is? Yesterday everything worked fine and the laptop is still reasonably new.

Either the charging cable or the battery is defective. It may also be the charging electronics are defective, but that is rare. I would try another cable and if it does not work, you should buy a new battery.
I have just made a new Windows update and it seems to go again, but thanks anyway.
Okay, that should not be due to the operating system, because the charging electronics are independent of it. Most of the time, there's such a small light somewhere, which signals that the battery is being charged. You should rather look there. I suspect that the display in the operating system did not work correctly.
Even if it goes back now, which is very nice for you, rechargeable batteries are sometimes only up to 80%, 90% or similar loaded and then not… That belongs to a loader of the manufacturer to spare the battery… At the next charge cycles will be charged 100% again.
Nice that it works again, but the Windows Update is not. The loading works even if the system is switched off or even the HD is removed.
it may be that the device was too hot from operation and ambient temperature and therefore prevented charging
some devices have the possibility to limit the loading to other values in the BIOS (not Windows) or to recharge them only if they are below a certain value.
It may have been the power supply hot and therefore have not supplied power.
It can be a loose contact somewhere
