Found my old laptop and wanted to start it but forgot the password what can I do now to get my data back?
What operating system is installed on this old laptop?
Which operating system?
Windows 7 used to be Windows 8
Windows 7 used to be Windows 8
Then you can do this and follow these steps:
Start Linux via USB or CD / DVD and save the data to an external memory…
Remove the plate and connect it externally to another computer…
Depending on the system, create an admin account…
But I generally want to open the laptop so I can access it again

Or back up data and set it up again…
In Windows 7, you could try using the offline NT Password & Registry Editor to remove the password.
It is an ISO file that you can download here: http://pogostick.net/~pnh/ntpasswd/
You burn the ISO file onto a DVD using another device or alternatively create a bootable USB stick. As of Windows 7, there's an option directly under Windows to burn an ISO file to a data carrier. To do this, right-click on the ISO file and select Burn disk image. Otherwise there would be the CDBurnerXP to burn an ISO file to a DVD: https://cdburnerxp.se/de/home
If you choose the variant with the USB stick, then download the free Rufus program: https://rufus.akeo.ie/?locale=de_DE
With the exception of one setting, you can leave everything like this at Rufus. Simply integrate the ISO file using the selection button. Then start the process.
You then boot from the created data carrier by inserting the DVD into the drive or inserting the USB stick into one of your USB slots and then turning on your laptop. If your laptop starts as usual, you must first change the boot order in the BIOS: https://praxistipps.chip.de/...ehts_10161
As soon as the Password & Registry Editor has been started, you select the partition on which Windows is installed and then press Enter again to confirm the registry path.
Now select the first option => Password reset with space as delimeter and then again the first option => Edit user data and passwords.
Now enter your username and confirm this with Enter. Now select the first option again => Clear (blank) user password.
Now you give! One to confirm everything. Finally Q to exit the tool.
The password should now have been removed if everything worked out.
If that doesn't work, I would simply back up all important files and then reinstall Windows. I recommend Hiren's BootCD to back up the files.
It is an ISO file, which you can download for free here: https://www.hirensbootcd.org/download/
I have already explained how you can burn an ISO file onto a DVD or create a bootable USB stick.
Then boot from the created disk. It then runs a live version of Windows 10, which you can then use to easily access and back up your files.
If you only care about your data, burn a Linux Live CD / DVD e.g. B. KNOPPIX and use it to read your data.
However, if you want to put the laptop back into operation, set the password e.g. B. With the computer image emergency DVD back:
