I have a prehistoric Dell Latitude D510.
The thing is lame, but with Lubuntu it is enough to surf - and somehow I enjoy it. So please don't ask for the meaning.
I want to upgrade this laptop now, so above all I want to install a better CPU.
Current CPU: Pentium M 740 (if I see that correctly. The BIOS says Pentium M 1.73Ghz, ID: 06D8)
Base: base 479
BIOS version: A03 (2005), could be updated to A04. If I see that correctly, only logos are added. https://www.dell.com/...itude-d510
The following CPUs are possible on this page: https://www.dell.com/...-p/5148076
U6422 Celeron M 350 1.30 GHz
W6217 Celeron M 360 1.40 GHz
R6749 Celeron M 370 1.50 GHz
R8494 Celeron M 380 1.60 GHzW4773
Pentium M 730 1.60 GHz
W4774 Pentium M 740 1.73 GHz
M4185 Pentium M 750 1.86 GHz
M4186 Pentium M 760 2.00 GHz
U4671 Pentium M 770 2.13 GHz
From what I've found so far, the Pentium M 770 is the best. Am I correct? Are there any better CPUs than the above?
Which is the best solution for this - no idea. But there's a hotline at Dell - call free of charge and get advice - would be the best
I advise against that. The technology is not designed to be upgraded, but to be thrown away.
It is often the case that sockets / CPUs etc. Have identical names, but then an internal name and a "secret" pin and things do not work as you would expect from the manual. Etc.
That CAN go well. But whether you're really doing well is your own risk. It is not worth the price-performance ratio.
Price-performance ratio? The CPU costs 3 euro.
Then why don't you order them and try it instead of posting here?
Did you read the question
I'm sure it CAN go well. The hardware is just too weak for today's conditions. Even the strongest Pentium M does not come close to the current cheapest X86s.
The 770 M is a bit faster, but not exhilaratingly fast. It won't get more than 20% faster.
I can understand you. I also enjoy old devices, but only for old purposes… If you want to go faster, every Chromebook is better.
It's clear to me that this won't be a gaming laptop.
But it is already enough for surfing. Even YouTube has slight stutters. If it runs smoothly after the upgrade, it would be a fully functioning laptop.
I also have a Gericom Hummer 2860XL. There's a Pentium 4 2.8Ghz in it. But I still haven't been able to find out which CPUs I could upgrade with.
Possibly socket 478.
It is evident that the last is the best. Otherwise, the above applies.
What makes you think that? I suspected that too - but didn't really find anything to be sure of.
That being said, do you have any ideas how I could find out which CPU supports the BIOS as much as possible? This is an Amercan Megatrends v02.53. So far I have been unable to find any information about it.
No idea, unfortunately.
