Disadvantages of laptops without an operating system?

ki

. You have to install one to use the device.

fa

If you want to install Windows, you have to take care of it yourself, as a die-hard Linux fan I always order all computers without a OS so that I can set them up myself, and Linux distributions are largely free of charge.

Ju

You have to get and install the operating system yourself and there are many people who are simply not able to do so. For such people, it's a disadvantage.

So my laptop is a Schenker Slim 15. So the Internet says that it has no operating system but that Windows 10 home is already installed. How do you explain that?

Well, then he has a Windows OS and you then have no additional work.

Ju

The statement contradicts itself. Either there's no operating system installed or Windows 10 Home is preinstalled as the operating system.

Depending on where you bought the device, it may also be that the dealer offers both options and you can then choose which version you want during the purchase.
Or if you have looked at various sites / retailers that some offer it with an operating system (Win10) and the others without an operating system.

Assuming my laptop arrives in a few days and has no operating system, how would I download an operating system and will it cost money? For example if I download Windows 10 home?

Ju

The download of Windows 10 itself does not cost money, but the license (key) to activate it. The prices for the license / key vary depending on the dealer and the type of license.

You should download Windows 10 as an ISO file.

Then create a bootable USB stick.
(There are many instructions on how to do this on the Internet.)

Then boot the laptop from the USB stick and follow the instructions of the installation wizard.

Otherwise there are also people who sell installation media. So a corresponding installation USB stick or installation DVD.

Na

Ok then I have one last question. If I buy such a key now, is it in my case because I have little idea better if I buy a USB stick with an impressive key? And which BS would you recommend to me as a student?

Na

Until then, you are definitely the most helpful comment.

ki

Then that's 2 different pieces of information. I would believe that of the manufacturer.

Ju

If you do not have the opportunity to create a corresponding installation USB stick yourself, you can also buy one.

It doesn't matter whether you get it together with the key or both. It is best to see what offers there are and decide which option / combination is the cheapest for you.

And which BS would you recommend to me as a student?

Depends on the course, but with Windows you usually don't do much wrong.

In my studies in computer science, Linux distributions were mostly represented.
Well-known from the design area primarily used macOS.

Ju

But if Windows is preinstalled, this is done anyway. In this case, a Windows key has already been entered.

Here I would order a USB pen with Linux Mint Live 19.3 from IXSOFT for 10 euro, then it doesn't matter what the computer has on the disk. When the pen is plugged in and booted from it, you are already on the Mint desktop and can use all programs that Mint has in the basic installation (Mail, Office, Firefox, Multimedia…).

All user data is saved on the pen (if desired).

Linux Mint (the most popular Linux) can also be legally installed by the pen and used permanently on the computer free of charge (if desired).

Mint is very easy to use, like XP, even if the big experts don't mention it. A license is not required.

Linux does not spy and does not have any of the many Windows restrictions - a virus scanner is not required for high-quality operating systems (according to BSI and me).

Most of my computers run great with Mint.

lo

I don't quite understand it. On the one hand it was said that there's no operating system on it, on the other hand windows are preinstalled on it. So an operating system on it…

it could be that the windows on the device is not activated. I.e. Another key is needed to activate it.
