Which device do a notebook, tablet or convertible get?

I want to get a new device for the university because my old device has given up the ghost. Now I don't know which device would be most useful. I don't want to buy a device that I don't need just because it has a big name or because it has tools that I won't use but have to have and then pay an overpriced price for it.
What would you recommend a notebook, a tablet or a Conventible and which model would you recommend?

For the university: notebook
