Still have a small "netbook" (quasi mini laptop), Samsung NC10
Was originally delivered with "Windows XP Home Edition ULCPC", the corresponding sticker with the product key etc. Is still on the underside.
Since I'm about to sell the device, I have formatted the hard drive via "Darik's Boot and Nuke" to delete all data.
Now I have to install an operating system before I sell, but I don't know what to do next - there doesn't seem to be an ISO file for Windows XP, right?
I would have to do the Windows installation using a USB stick.
Windows 10 wouldn't be a problem, but the specs don't seem to be enough for that, e.g. Only has 1 GB RAM, I think.
Windows 7 would probably work.
Can you also use a Windows 10 key for the Win 7 installation?
Or do you still get Win XP somewhere for the USB stick installation?
You may get WinXP as a CD from well-stocked specialist dealers around the corner
I wouldn't risk Win7, because it swallowed more hardware than WinXP
Naturally, Win10 keys do not work with Win7, as they are not downwardly compatible
Just sell it without an operating system.
Ok, unfortunately it doesn't work on CD as there's no drive. Need the bootable ISO on USB stick
Win7 would run on the device, according to Google
But somehow I can't find Win7 keys anymore, only Win10? You can get them for 2-3 euro on eBay
Hmm well then the buyer faces the same problem.
If the notebook is really that old, then you will not be able to boot from the USB stick, ergo would only be ex. CD drive
If google says that…
There are still enough Win7 keys, see e.g. https://www.mmoga.de/Software/Windows/
Win XP, you get thrown behind on eBay, try there.
But it wouldn't be your problem anymore.
Ok, unfortunately it doesn't work on CD as there's no drive. Need the bootable ISO on USB stick
This is exactly the reason why a backup is created BEFORE such deletion actions as you have carried out:
You can restore and use the recovery partition.
In general, only those people run into these types of problems who have still not noticed after decades that backups are necessary. In so far: 🤷♂️
So off to eBay - there you'll find heaps of Windows XP editions to buy.
I would install a Linux distro on it. For example Bodhi Linux. This only requires 1/3 of the system resources that Windows XP would otherwise need. Since the built-in processor is 32-bit, you need the 32-bit version:
https://sourceforge.net/...o/download
Then iron the ISO with this tool https://unetbootin.github.io/ on an empty FAT32 formatted USB stick. Then boot the stick and follow the instructions of the wizard. Midori is installed as a web browser, which requires little system resources and can display HTML5 pages without any problems.
Bodhi Linux goes off like a rocket. Even if you use a desktop theme with transparency effects, only about 3% more system resources are required.
My recommendation would be an operating system that runs smoothly, such as Linux. I advise against using WinXP after the source code has recently appeared on the Internet because there's a risk of viruses if the computer should be used for the web.
But I wanted to make the hard drive completely flat before selling it, for the purpose of possibly data recovery, etc.
I dare to doubt whether creating a backup and just leaving the rest is suitable.
