I want to install a Linux distribution on my laptop that I want to work with in the future, but I want to keep my WIN 7.
My hard drive has 300 GB and is not yet partitioned.
Which Linux distribution is recommended and how many and how big should I make the partitions?
At the beginning I would recommend a relatively beginner-friendly distribution, e.g. Mint, Ubuntu or Feodora.
Incidentally, here is a relatively good explanation for dual installation:
I have been using Linux Mint for a long time, which I find very useful and nice for beginners. Manjaro is also a good alternative.
Otherwise there's Arch and Kali Linux, but I wouldn't recommend that to you…
As a partition size, I would recommend at least 100 GB, depending on how much space is left.
One partition in ext4 is sufficient
How much space do you need for Windows?
It will depend on how big the partitions for Linux can be.
Linux separates the system area from user data. This is exactly what should be shown in partitions.
20GB should be enough for the system. The rest for / home. A SWAP partition (the size of the RAM) is recommended.
I think "beginner-friendly" is nonsense. Either you want Linux and that means rethinking. One thing is certain. It becomes even easier because it is more logical.
I have been using the SuSE distribution since 1995.
