Most of it is already up. It's an old billo laptop that I only use in the evening on the couch or in bed, to work, to play, I have a stand-alone PC. The laptop's hard drive is now through, or it clacks and rattles like crazy, and soon gives up the ghost. I don't want to repair the laptop with a new hard drive… Can't I just use a USB stick to start the laptop? Only go to Youtube and chess.com
I don't know Windows, but you can start Linux from a USB stick
Of course it works. You can download a bootable stick from the Windows website for free.
Yes of course, that's called Win To Go: https://www.chip.de/...22509.html
If the laptop can do that, you make a so-called boot stick to boot. I would also save the rest on an external hard drive. Otherwise your cookies are all gone.
I entered things like (Win 10 on stick) on Google for 30 minutes, but nothing was suggested to me. Thank you, this is exactly what I was looking for.
In theory this is possible, but in practice I would advise against starting the notebook permanently via USB stick.
On the one hand, the sticks are slower than a hard drive or SSD and, on the other hand, they are not designed for more frequent write processes (as would be the case with virtual RAM / Windows swap files). So I would assume that the stick breaks quite quickly?
Is the base plate of the notebook screwed on or does the notebook have a service flap / service cover? In this case, an existing hard disk can easily be replaced. A https://www.amazon.de/...0077IQ0AM/ or https://www.amazon.de/...01D3ACJPW/ is available for less than € 30 and causes significantly fewer problems. There would only be a problem if your existing hard drive was so old that it is still an IDE model, you would have to look at E-Bay or other platforms for second-hand goods, but you can still get them quite cheaply.
The self-made Windows USB pens can't be used for live operation, only the free Linux can do that.
This works in practice without any problems and is suitable for beginners (the Linux version), I have been using a USB pen with Mint Cinnamon for years without any problems to use the computer safely and with high performance. Even at work I always use a laptop with a Mint USB pen, so nothing had to be changed on the hard drive (bitlocker blocked).
Please write how it worked and whether you can now use Windows without a license.
