What would I need to use normal headphones? There was a combined connection on my laptop and the quality wasn't bad at all.

Huh? I need a combination of both to use cell phone headphones? Otherwise I can either only use audio or nothing at all

None at all, because normal headphones usually only have the function of headphones - so you just connect them to the connection with the headphones symbol.
If you have a device with a 4-pin jack, you just need an adapter from 2x 3-pin to 1x 4-pin. You can find it e.g. On Amazon

No, unfortunately not, they were with my brother's headset… I just took it because he didn't need it
OK, then we have different ideas about normal headphones.
Cell phone headphones have a 4-pin jack.
