Which processor is the best for my motherboard?

Today, more or less by chance, I saved a somewhat older but still well-preserved and Windows 10-compatible HP Compaq computer from the recycling center for a small donation for the coffee till from the scrap. I found it a bit too good for it and after a few small steps (new used 450W power supply and SSD in) it runs again.

I plan to make it a second computer next to my notebook and would like to upgrade it a little so that you can play a few games with it. The maximum RAM (4 GB) was already installed, but the processor can still be upgraded a bit. An AMD II Athlon X3 425 with 2.7 GHz is currently installed. The mainboard is an M2N68-LA Narra 6.

According to HP, the following processors are supported:

AMD Phenom II X4 9xx / 9xxe / 8xx Quad-Core (D)
AMD Phenom II X3 7xx / 7xxe Triple-Core (H)
AMD Phenom II X2 5xx (C)
AMD II Athlon X4 6xx / 6xxe (P)
AMD II Athlon X3 4xx / 4xxe (R)
AMD II Athlon X2 2xx / 2xxe (R)
AMD Sempron 1xx (S)

I personally would either use an AMD II Athlon X4 or AMD Phenom II X4, but I don't really know where the difference between the two is or which one is the best. The PC will later only be internet-capable, can play office applications and a few games, but the processor will all work with older models.

Nevertheless, I would have liked to get the most out of the motherboard (for Windows 10 alone) and would like to know which of the processors listed is the best for my M2N68-LA Narra6 motherboard, since I use the Intel processors rather than the models I'm familiar with from AMD.

The phenom's are better. More cache, more clock, more transistors, mostly more clock, everything better.

the Phenom II X4 980 would be the fastest, I think, but they are expensive. Such a Phenom II X4 965 or 955 is not much slower and measures for a lot less.

Unfortunately, all of these CPUs are very slow. The AMD Phenom II X4 is only + 10% faster than the current x3. The 2.7 GHZ corresponds to approximately 1.2 GHZ of current CPUs.

I would not swap the CPU anymore, that would only make sense if you could switch to Ryzen.

A used GTX 750 Ti or GTX 950 would make sense as a graphics card, so for 60 EUR you can still play older games well.

The best for this board is the AMD Phenom II X4 960T because the board only up to max. 95W CPUs supported

Hmm, good question I had also looked at Userbenchmark.com, but I somehow swapped something?

In any case: from 27% to 39% corresponds to + 40% performance, but the 39% is still less than half that would be necessary.

In theory you're right. Just when I got the CPU, I found that my BIOS version 5.11 can't do anything with the CPU.

The strongest CPU for my board would be the Phenom II X4 955 3.2 with 3.2 GHz in the 95 watt version. However, it is rather rare and therefore expensive. The strongest and cheapest CPU was the AMD Phenom II X4 945 with 3.0 GHz, which I got now.

The 955 is actually the most powerful one that can be installed without a BIOS update. However, in the 95 watt version a bit too expensive for my needs. So I took the slightly weaker 945.

Should also be a noticeable upgrade.
