No, they can just take a long time. You definitely didn't break the NOtebook.
If it takes too long, you can press the power button until it goes out. The next time it is started it will be normal as before the update.
A question of which operating system you have on the device. With Windows there's often a backup when you switch the device off and on again it goes back to the default setting, but this is a 70% chance that Windows may be defective. But then the device is not defective, you can reload windows, but then the existing data is lost if no backup was made
