Since yesterday (06.06.2020) Steam no longer works on my Windows XP laptop and I'm only stuck with "Connecting to Steam account: accountname". Steamerrorreporter.exe appears in the Task Manager, but then disappears quickly. I downloaded Steam from an archive because it is no longer supported on Windows XP. Here is the link to the archive: https://archive.org/details/steam_201901. I have not yet tried a new installation because someone in the archive is also complaining about the problem. Maybe you know how to solve that.
By installing Windows 8 or Windows 10. Alternatively from Linux.
Why are you still using XP? This is as uncertain as anything else.
Will definitely be XP, there's not much you can do
I did not ask for a new operating system, but for a solution to this problem!
And the new operating system would be a solution to the problem.
What do you think why Windows XP is high on the computer?
Probably because he's old.
Hence the reference to Linux, which still runs without problems with XFCE Desktop as with Mint.
Yesterday was 06.06.2020…
the date 06.07.2020 is still in the future - so something is wrong with your question…
The solution to your problem is to update the operating system… There are no other options…
Linux unfortunately does not include the complexity, beauty and compatibility of Windws (XP).
On what basis are we discussing here?
Linux includes the latest security patches for this.
It's just as straightforward with mint (even easier in many ways).
Beauty? Is fully customizable in Linux, including an XP look
Compatibility? At least Steam runs on it…
But are you already aware that Windows XP is an open barn door and shouldn't be connected to the internet?
Just install a modern system - either a modern Windows or Linux
Sooo,
since many have now written that I should get a more current operating system, I would like to draw your attention to the actual question. Don't worry about my security with Windows XP, my main computer has Windows 10. I only use the Windows XP computer because of the retro feeling.
For your use case, if there's software that only runs on XP, you can still install a VM.
You can download so-called "skins" that make your Windows 10 look like XP. ^^
I know. Windows 10 will unfortunately still remain the same. In addition, the performance of the computer is grotty with Windows 10. Thanks for a creative answer that is not "get a newer Windows".
No problem. ^^ But that's right, inside, of course, it remains Windows 10. But for me, Win 10 Performance runs moderately really well. Maybe a virtual machine can help you!
The computer is a Thinkpad x60s, so less a high-end product that Windows 10 virtualization can do. The computer only packs virtual machines up to Windows 95.
As already written at @ Zoomy66, the computer would not pack a VM with Windows 10.
Hence the suggestion with the XP VM
Too bad. : / Then unfortunately I can't think of anything.
