Can I access my older notebook with driver and network problems with my internet-enabled notebook in order to get back on the internet and install updates?
What operating system is on the older notebook? If Windows Vista or Windows 7 is still on, there's unfortunately no support for it. Then no current web browser versions run anymore. Older web browsers have problems displaying current web pages. Some go and some don't.
Then you can do the following: Install the free Cloudready operating system. This is a Linux-based customized Chrome OS that turns any device into an extremely fast Chromebook. Here is the download: https://www.neverware.com/freedownload You need the USB Maker and an empty formatted USB stick. After you have created the stick with it, simply boot it and follow the instructions of the wizard. It offers the possibility to delete everything. After completing the installation and restarting, the WLAN setup comes. Have the WLAN key ready. Then simply log in with your Google account. In the browser settings in the Plugins section, Flash, Codecs and Widevine can be installed with just one click. Then you can also use DRM-protected content. Restart again and your free Chromebook is ready.
The browser and Chrome apps start without delay and it requires very little system resources. Even with only 2GB RAM, it works like a rocket.
Here is a video of what Cloudready looks like: https://chip-a.akamaihd.net/p/1741931/sp/174193100/serveFlavor/entryId/1_fkslx2p1/v/1/flavorId/1_xwn0heci/name/a.mp4
Many thanks, mnlwrnr, first of all for this prompt and detailed answer!
My older notebook had Windows Vista, was upgraded to Windows 7 and then continued to Windows 10. In September last year, I haven't been able to update it since then.
I've had problems like this before. Could then download drivers from an internet-compatible notebook and install them on the old notebook. Unfortunately, this time it doesn't work for me.
Then it may be that there are no more current drivers for newer Windows versions. I would try it out with the Cloudready. You don't have to install drivers with Bri Cloudready because Cloudready has its own hardware database. If something is not supported, a dialog box will appear during installation.
