HDMI / USB graphics card does not work via HDMI switch?

I bought a USB graphics card because my laptop only has an HDMI port. With the graphics card that I plug into the USB port, everything is fine and I can use my second monitor without any problems.
Now I wanted to put an HDMI switch in between so that you can switch between 2 laptops.
As soon as the HDMI switch is stuck in between, the monitor no longer works, which runs via the graphics card. The monitor says that the input is not supported. Without the switch, however, it works perfectly.
What could this be due to? Is there another possibility?

Your problem is you have the wrong HDMI distributor, HDMI only outputs signals in one direction. You have one entrance and two exits.

HDMI only works in one direction, namely from the image source (in your case the graphics card) to the image output (monitor or television or projector).
A switch therefore only has one input (image source) and several outputs (image output).
That means you can switch a graphics card to 2 monitors, but not 2 graphics cards to just one monitor.
Switches with multiple inputs are available in my opinion. Not.
