Go to an electronics store, look at the laptops there and take the one you like.
The university does not care which you come with!
I think the convertibles are best because you can easily make a notebook out of them.
Alternative: Used ThinkPad on eBay.

Do you just want a clean laptop or do you also plan on writing? In that case, I would consider not yet a Surface or similar device to buy. (Surface Pro 4 or Surface Pro 5) One possibility would be if necessary Another used / Refurb on Ebay etc. To buy. Every now and then people spend their whole equipment relatively cheap after graduation. There you definitely get more for your money than to buy a current calculator for 'only' 400 euro.
If that is not an option then I would definitely go for college ~ 250GB SSD or 1TB HDD with 8-16GB of RAM and an Intel i5 / i7. Battery life is almost always so bad that you have to take a charging cable anyway.
