I'm currently thinking about which laptop to get for an engineering degree. I definitely want to be able to run CAD programs and write programs. For me, a Surface Pro would be an advantage thanks to its multifunctionality as a laptop and tablet when studying or taking notes in lectures. Nevertheless, the price is important, which is why a Matebook 14 or similar is also an option. I also have a solid PC, but it's already 6-7 years old and its lifespan is uncertain. What do you think makes more sense for an engineering degree? I would also be happy to receive specific model recommendations.
How big is the budget? And what equipment is required?
Neither the Matebook nor the Surface Pro are CAD-compatible notebooks.
For easier CAD tasks you can look at something like this: https://www.dell.com/...op3551emea
However, this device will already reach its limits with more complex 3D drawings in Inventor - especially when rotating or zooming.
CAD programs should run stably on it, at least 8GB RAM and a budget of up to 1000 euro
Thanks for your answer. But which device would you recommend for more complex drawings?
Take a look at the new Lenovo Ideapad 5 Pro 16ACH6

Well over budget, with a Quadro RTX3000

Or if you can somehow live with a French keyboard layout
Do you happen to know whether SiemensNX will be used?
Yes, it is very likely that this program will be used. Does that fit with your suggestion from Lenovo?
No, for Siemens NX you would definitely have to take something with a Quadro or RadeonPro, the performance is extremely bad on a normal Geforce card
Okay, would you have another suggestion for me then?
Yes, it would far exceed the 1000 euro budget
Mh OK send me in anyway, is it so difficult to get a decent laptop that is within a student's budget?
Yes, Siemens NX just poops in a bit, because the performance on Geforce cards is extremely limited by the driver. Even the iGPU of the 5800H beats the RTX 3090 here
Do other students only use the university PCs or do they all have such a large budget? Can you send me your other suggestion, one that is well over budget
OK, thank you very much for your help. Do you think you have to create more complex drawings in the first 2 semesters or do you need a laptop like this or a laptop like the first one you sent is sufficient.
I guess there won't be such complex drawings in the first 2 semesters, but I can't guarantee that
The problem is really only Siemens NX, which in principle requires ne Quadro or RadeonPro
The IdeaPad is easily enough for everything else
What do you think of the suggestions made by user sgt119?
https://www.idealo.de/...nexoc.html
What do you think of this?
CPU is a bit weak for CAD and it doesn't have a dedicated graphics card
The Ideapad 5 Pro is far better, the 100 euro surcharge is definitely worth it
OK, all right, thank you.
