If you go to Save as, you can choose the format. There should be one that is designed for older versions.
You always have to save from the newer version in an older format, this can then be read. Called backward compatibility.
If I pull the 2013 version from the stick and want to open it, an error is displayed directly and it does not open
Yes, you need to save them as a compatible format at school or where you created them.
