How do AAE files come about?

I wanted to save my pictures from iPhone to my laptop. The JPG files can be opened on the laptop. However, some images are AAE files, even though they are not edited or anything else. I can't open it.

Can it be helped?

AAE files are created when you edit a photo on iPhone, no matter how minimal. They have the same name as the original.
The edited photo has an "E" in the file name before the digits.
