Can you change the network name and password of the Devolo Magic 2 2400 Wi-Fi Powerline Adapter Mesh wlan ac function?
I do not want to set up a new network with the Devolo, but rather take over the password, name and IP address from the router. I only need the powerline adapter to have a strong signal further away from the router and to be able to use the laptop there with a LAN cable if necessary.
So is it possible to use Devolo as an extension of the router without it having to set up a new network?
Yes, both are possible. Do you have to reset the repeater and reconfigure the factory settings.
Yes, you can set it up like this, but I advise against it:
Since it is not a mesh system, a mesh system only works with mesh-capable devices from the SAME manufacturer, if you have different manufacturers this is not possible (Powerline access points are from Devolo and the WLAN router is certainly not from Devolo)
It reduces the Wi-Fi speeds, because both Wi-Fi access points (Wi-Fi router and Wi-Fi access point of the Devolo) are competitors in Wi-Fi. Especially if they are working on the same WLAN channel. And even have the same Wi-Fi name (SSID).
My recommendation for stability is:
Set a fixed WLAN channel on the configuration page of the WLAN router
On the configuration page of the Devolo WLAN access point, set another fixed WLAN channel (only channels 1, 6 and 11) are suitable.
Also name the WLAN name of the Devolo access point differently, the WLAN key (~ WLAN password) can be the same.
Connect your device to both Wi-Fi networks
The advantages are:
Since there are 2 WLAN access points anyway (regardless of which configuration is set), they do not get in each other's way (avoids mandatory breaks in WLAN radio traffic)
Do not change your WLAN devices irritating the WLAN access points, because this change causes short connection interruptions.
Your Wi-Fi devices decide the Wi-Fi network independently and according to sensible criteria (these are defined by the manufacturer).
That with the IP address regulates itself fully automatically, because your public IP address is always the same anyway, because the public IP address is given to you by the Internet provider.
And the local IP address is always the same IP address if you reserve the local IP address in the DHCP server (= router configuration page) (e.g., option: "Always give this device the same IP address").
To call up the configuration page of the integrated Devolo WLAN access point, look for the local IP address of the Devolo in your WLAN router (under Network or WLAN). It will be e.g. 192.168.1.25.
Now open a browser and enter this local IP address (192.168.1.25 in the example) as the web address in the browser. The login page of the Devolo WLAN access point appears. The access data, if not yet changed, are described in the Devolo manual (default is user: admin and leave the password blank).
Already knew?
You have different Wi-Fi access points (router + 1 or more Devolo's with Wi-Fi). However, all of these WLAN access points are on the same network. Only the WLAN access points have different names, but it is still the same local network.
Compare it with the 4 LAN ports of the router, these LAN ports on the router have different names: LAN 1, LAN 2, LAN 3 and LAN 4. Nevertheless, all LAN ports are in the same network.
The only difference between LAN and WLAN is the connection technology (wired and wireless), all wireless devices and wired devices are in the same local network.
Please note,
He has Powerline with integrated WLAN access points. They are not repeaters.
It doesn't matter how you call it. But my instruction is correct.
