Laptop DVD RAM does not play or recognize CD's?

Just after burning an audio CD I found that my laptop (Envy dv 7) neither reads nor recognizes these or other inserted CDs. DVD / CD-ROM drives (hp-DVDRAM GT80N) are displayed in the device manager. Driver software up to date. Makes noises as if CD is playing right away, but Winamp does not open, nothing then hangs up… Use Windows 8.1 … Would be very grateful for easy-to-understand help ;-) …
