Laptop defect hard drive removed how to back up data?

My laptop has given up the ghost so the start button is completely destroyed. But that is not the point. The question is how can I transfer the data on the hard disk to an external hard drive? (At least the most important ones) what exactly do I need? Have tried to install hard disk into another laptop but got only the message (no device etc. Drop Boot Disk.)

Do you have a tower? Connect the hard disk to the motherboard via cable. If not, buy a hard disk docking station and connect it to a PC / laptop.

Buy external hard drive cases (available from about 5 euro), so that the hard drive can continue to use.

All you have to do is connect the old Leptop hard drive to a PC as an external hard drive.
