What tips do you have for data recovery from a broken external HDD hard drive?

I recently wanted to look at pictures on my old external HDD. I attached it to the power supply and had to hold it away for a moment with my arm outstretched to connect the USB cable to the laptop. Obviously that was enough that the reading head probably "shifted" inside. In any case, the hard drive "cracked" and was also no longer recognized on the laptop. I'm not sure whether it was the dreaded "click of death". In any case, I immediately disconnected it from the electricity. My question now is whether there are any good "tools" to save the data here yourself. I would like to avoid professional data recovery in a company for two reasons: 1.) very expensive and 2.) I do not want to give this hardware to someone else's hands because there's private stuff on the hard drive.

Is the HDD not recognized at all at the moment? If so, then it is probably a hardware defect and you can hardly do anything except screw it on and try to bring the read head back into the correct position, but without the know-how and without a really clean air without dust, the hard drive can quickly could destroy completely
