Transfer data from Sony phone to computer?

When I connect my cell phone to the computer with the cable, there are three options for my sony cell phone and one is "transfer data to other devices" but if I click on it nothing happens, so there's no data carrier on the computer, so my cell phone is not displayed. The other way around, so I can't load anything from my computer onto my cell phone. This is really stressful because then I always have to send all files to my mother so that she can load it onto her computer with her cell phone (other brand). Do I still need any app or something? But my sony cell phone is displayed on my laptop. What's this?!

"Transfer data" is correct. It also takes me minutes to see the phone in Explorer. Even when working with it, when copying, the connection can be lost again. I only copy in blocks of 10.
