Restoring data from laptop how does it work?

So I was on vacation, then came back and was told that my laptop had got a new system without my consent. Now all my videos and photos are gone and I wanted to ask if it is possible to restore them? Because I really care

ca

Of course this is possible if there's a backup of the data.

If not, a full restore is no longer possible. Individual files can possibly be restored, but the old operating system must be reinstalled.

ts

It depends on how big everything is overall, since programs that could restore it are limited because they are free.

Me

Based on the question, I assume that it is a company device, why else would someone have simply replaced something without your consent.

If you haven't made a backup copy of your private content on the company device, then the data is probably gone.

In the future, it is better not to leave private content (only) locally on the company computer, but rather copy it to external data carriers (USB stick, external hard drive).

ts

Would stupid say that it is not a company device, because who should have private photos / videos on it, and I don't think you can do that at all.

Me

And I would stupidly claim that no third party simply equips my private laptop with a new system in my absence without asking me first.

I know enough people who (even against the instructions of the employer) store a lot of private stuff there and virtually "share" it.

And now?

So I'm unfortunately not that familiar with this area, and was glad that I can handle the laptop at all. What does that mean with the backup?

la

I'm currently trying with wondershare recoverit

To protect yourself against data loss, you create a copy of your data, the so-called "backup". Ideally with the help of a tool that can then quickly and easily import the whole thing again when it is needed. Of course, you have to do this before the data is lost.

Rh

If it is a company laptop, you do not have to store any private data there. In this respect, de AG is not obliged to ensure that this data is appropriately backed up - your data, your risk.

ts

Then these people are very smart.

Au

You can try programs like r-Studio or UFS Explorer. They are very good at putting together a file system from leftover data.

A larger part of the data could have been destroyed by overwriting with the new system…

If you want it to be free then you can use Photorec. However, this will not restore file names and folder structures!
