For very modern laptops that have a USB Type C connection with Thunderbolt, there's something like that.
Alternatively, there would be crafting versions for older laptops, but then you have to leave your laptop where it is because you need to put cables into the inside of the laptop that you can't turn off so easily.
You can use the solution via the internal M.2 PCIe port, or you can do it via Thunderbolt 3 (USB 3.1 Type C). If your laptop does not have either, it will not work, or only by very cumbersome ways!
Giving it this only you would not be much better than your current one. The problem is the adaptation to the existing interfaces and their bandwidth. As this limits the actual performance. Depending on the laptop model, there are docking stations where you can install an additional graphics card (mostly Slim variants). But varies from manufacturer to manufacturer.
