There's no 'trick' there. Play and win, eventually the Uprank will follow. You can only accelerate this by playing against a much higher Elo and winning, of course.
But you need mates with higher ranks, who let you play along or create a lobby and invite you to. Otherwise no opponents with a higher Elo will be searched by the system.

As you yourself said, you used to be really bad and probably somewhere in the low silver. The system recognizes your skill level as "Silver" and tries to challenge you against as equal an opponent as possible. A few wins will not change that much if you already have a long history of playing silver.
Simply put, the more games you have, the more "precise" the system can tell you. You also get "fewer points" per win or loss to keep you at your level. Only if you consistently win against your current opponent, you will also be spanked again. A few wins in 2-3 days can't balance your entire story from bad games ^^
