Does the protective layer on monitor displays yellow over the years?

I have two old Thinkpad laptops here. And both have a yellow layer on the display (TN panels).

I would like to know if this is the former protective layer against reflections?

Yellowing doesn't actually do anything. Probably the grease, dirt and dust that has accumulated over the years if you don't clean the screen.
