My laptop only has one hdmi output. Can I make two out of one with one HDMI splitter?
Are these then also recognized as different 2 screens, so that I can edit 2 separate things on them?

Yes

No. One screen per HDMI slot on the device. With splinters there's nothing. Because you can't turn 1 signal into 2 individually controlled, separate ones: 3
That with the splitter already works but the screens are not recognized as 2 but if you want to connect 2 screens there's a USB to HDMI adapter so you can connect your screen and it will also be recognized as a 2nd. (just look at Amazon USB to HDMI adapter)
