Why does audio not work?

I have a surface pro 7 laptop, which i connect with hdmi to a philips monitor without audio. Picture is ok, audio is not. With the predecessor of my laptop (surface pro 4) audio worked. I realize that the sound was coming from the pc and not the monitor. What can I do?
