Do 3.5 inch hard drives run at 5 volts?

Hi! I have an old 3.5 inch Seagate hard drive and wanted to buy an adapter so that I can connect this hard drive to my laptop via USB…
Now the question:
Do I need a power supply for the adapter so that the hard disk gets 12 volts?
Or would it also work with 5 volts?

There are two pieces of data on the hard drive:
+ 5V 0.316A
+ 12V 0.155A

Do 3.5 inch hard drives run at 5 volts

Which adapter do I need best for such a hard drive?

br

Yes, but take one with a decent amperage. They need some juice to start up, and some of them don't start properly otherwise. But voltage 5V is correct.

Vi

5V should be correct

One should see the connection there. Maybe this is an old IDE FP. It needs both, 5V and 12V. That would explain the information on the record. To do this, you need a corresponding external housing with a separate power supply unit…

En

You need both 5 and 12v.

You can't get past the 12 V. They are absolutely necessary. When buying the power supply unit, make sure to use the right plug. Most adapters come with a power supply unit: https://www.amazon.de/...01K22TZ3I/

Okay thanks, but why is there 5 volts left?

Gu

A 3.5 inch hard drive needs 5 and 12 volts to function

The adapter works with a 12 V power supply. The required 12 and 5 V are generated by the adapter and made available to the 3.5 "hard disk 1.
