Error Message Notebook Bootmgr is missing - Windows?

My notebook does not work and displays the following error message: bootmgr is missing. I still have the Windows 7 operating system installed. After some research I read that you need the Windows 7 DVD to play the operating system up again. Unfortunately I can't find these anymore, because this is a very old model and unfortunately the product key is not readable anymore. Could still work. I do not want to lose files like pictures, videos, etc.

What can I do? Buy and upload a new version of Windows 7? How is a data backup possible?

Br

In the error message, I would most likely say that your hard drive is in the bucket.

Gr

Why this error message, what happened - because that's just not a "normal" state.

Legally, this is only possible via https://www.microsoft.com/...d/windows7
Otherwise, you may want to search the internet for "Windows 7 ISO Image download" or ask a friend.
But remember that the support of Windows 7 ends in January 2020, I have now been WINDOWS 10 for half a year.

Many thanks for the answer. Should that work with the download of the operating system then all previous data will be lost?

Gr

Ohh, I can't say that anymore, because I'm out of Win7 for too long. If you can select upgrade (similar to Win10), the data would be retained - but will be displayed in the menu.

You have to fix the MasterBootRecord (Mbr). But you need a Win7 Setup DVD. Can you borrow from friends as well?

From the startup DVD go to command prompt (cmd) and fix the MBR with fixmbr.

exact instructions are available on the internet.

Many thanks for the answer.

Will the existing data be lost?

Ev

No, nothing is deleted. The bootloader is rewritten.
