Which backup program is best for the laptop?

Am looking for a program that performs automatic backups of my laptop to an external hard drive

Are there suggestions for free and which ones are worth the price?

I usually make backups with a Live Linux on a USB stick installed. 2 scripts that I have programmed myself and with the tool DD. Can even clone whole disks without data loss.

I use luckyBackup (Linux & BSD) or Time Machine (macOS). Both for free.

I like to use clonezilla (https://clonezilla.org/downloads.php) for backups. This is a live CD with which you can save individual partitions or entire hard disks. These are then saved compressed on a desired drive. Is completely free and has always worked well with me.
