I use a Benq PD2705Q monitor and plugged a mouse and keyboard into the USB ports. I access the picture, sound and the hub via the Thunderbolt connection on my work PC. Now I would like to use my new monitor for my private (somewhat older) Sony Vaio SVE1512N1EB laptop. So I use an HDMI cable for picture and sound and I want to access the hub with a USB-A to USB-B cable (USB 3.0). Unfortunately that doesn't work. What could be the reason?
For your information: I tested the USB cable and already exchanged it, that's not the problem. If I plug a hub directly into my USB 3.0 port on the laptop, the hub works, so the port on the laptop can't be defective. Apart from the power, HDMI, USB-B cable and the mouse and keyboard, no other devices are connected to the monitor. Using a USB 2.0 cable didn't help either.
The Thunderbolt Hub is the extension of your computer; you can connect all kinds of devices to it, including multiple monitors.
The other laptop has nothing to do with it and can't use this extension either. You would have to put a monitor cable from the old laptop to the screen and if it has 2 inputs, then you can switch between the two.
Alternatively, there are also HDMI switches that do this for a port.
I hope I really understood what you want to do there.
