Normally you do not connect two PCs with each other, but every PC with the router.
And for a very specific reason: The router contains a so-called DHCP server, which automatically assigns IP addresses to the PCs.
With a direct connection from PC to PC eliminates this service and you have to configure the LAN cards yourself.
Without IP there's no data exchange.
The thing is that one of the PC immediately recognizes the Lan but the other not at all (So if they are connected to the router).
