Linux live main system?

I'm in the situation that I use different PCs / laptops and my main laptop has a loose contact on the hard disk connector. Now I've considered buying a large USB stick and using a live operating system as the main system. At the moment I can only google very slowly on my cell phone and have not found anything so I ask here. Do you save the live versions of the standard Distros data after use or do you reset them and is there a way to remove them from the menu by installing them on the hard disk? Are the live versions fully valid or do certain commands not exist? Or are there perhaps distributions that are intended for live use and that don't reset like Tails? I'm new and have only just started playing around in the terminal, but at the moment I have the time to learn a more complex Linux and I just have to google, office and music so it does not have to be fast.
