Why does my laptop have 2 graphics cards?

I have an Nvidia GeForce GTX 950M and an Intel HD Graphics 620. I deactivated the Intel graphics card and then one screen no longer works just the other. If I disable NVIDIA nothing happens. How can I switch?

Be

The Intel is your onboard card

co

And what does NVIDIA bring then?

st

The Intel is taken for easier ad performance. But if more power is needed (games, graphics / video program), then the "right" graphics card will help.

Be

A card that is plugged into the board for more performance

Lo

It's better than that from Intel;)

Thanks for the answer! My problem is actually that my game that I download says that my graphics card is too bad.

co

No, I already have it!

st

Okay, then it fits:-)

Have fun playing ;-)

The Intel IGP's are only rudimentary for the smallest 3D games but are actually only for normal and energy-saving desktop display. The dedicated NVIDIA card has the right power, when it is used, the device automatically switches to it (here called Optimus).

Ha

One is for working and the other is for playing. But the 950M is very old, five years have been a long time for a notebook graphics card. It is not surprising that your game says that the graphics card is too bad for this, considering that really great games require at least a GTX 1070 Ti or even a GTX 1080 Ti. And then there are the completely insane games that also fully utilize an RTX 2080 Ti!

So you don't need to switch. You won't have fun playing the game on this hardware.

By the way BTW: which game is it?

Call of Duty BO4

Cool, awesome game! In order for it to run properly, you need a PC with at least NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 4GB / GTX 1060 6GB or AMD Radeon R9 390 / AMD RX 580. But I can't imagine that a GTX 970 can even begin to do it all Calculating or displaying graphics properly, and a 6 GB GTX 1060 would probably also run at full load. But the notebook with the 950M is unfortunately too weak for the game. 12 GB RAM is also recommended - do you have so much or only 8 GB?

Is

There's only a real graphics card in it. This is Nvidia's.

Intel's graphics are a sub-function of the CPU, so no extra card, not even an additional semiconductor chip.

The real graphics card is only required for real graphics loads, games, pictures, videos.

For all other tasks, the internal graphics function of the Intel CPU is sufficient, and since this requires significantly less power, the Nvidia graphics card is switched off and the battery is sufficient for longer operation.

I only have 8 GB. I want to buy a new PC anyway. It has 16 GB RAM and a graphics card PowerColor RX5700XT 8 GB. Is that enough?

Ha

No, so yes, first of all. With 16 GB you can already work / play well. But storage is so cheap anyway, so 32 GB of fast storage. The graphics card is the Burner, it's really good! Become a nice PC system!
