What are Cumulative Updates and what are their benefits?

I try to keep my laptop up to date with the latest updates. But now I noticed that I have already done a cumulative update twice. But what is the point and do I really need it?

Compared to normal updates, the cumulative updates are shorter. They contain patches for better security.
