How do I connect a Y headset cable to the laptop?

I would like to get a headset for my laptop. Now I have the problem that most headsets with a cable connection have a Y-cable and therefore a connector for the microphone and one for the headphones. However, my laptop only has one boutique for headphones and only one of them doesn't do me much good. How can I solve the whole thing?
