How to connect headset to laptop?

Following problem. I have a headset from Logitech which is connected via Aux. My laptop has an auxiliary input on which a headset is shown. When I then connect my headset, the sound runs through the headset but the microphone does not work. The sound goes through the headset, but I can't switch the output for the sound. How do I get the headset to work?
