I bought headphones from JBL today (JBL tunes 290) and the mic goes on the cell phone but on a laptop it doesn't matter where I plug it in

"No matter where I put it in" probably means that you have several jack connections on the laptop. Then you probably have audio out and mic. Then you need a Y-adapter from 4-pin to 2x3-pin
