How can I improve the performance of a laptop that is not that fast?
You can't do much there. Possibly install a larger RAM. Or install Linux.
There's usually not much that can be done. Install at most more RAM & an SSD
You can also use a more efficient operating system like Linux
What kind of device are we dealing with? That alone decides whether and what is worthwhile.

If you are worried about the line with a laptop. You will never get them for little money. Put on a neat PC.
Then the appropriate update should usually go with SSD and Ram. So you can still get a little bit of performance. Nevertheless, the model would still be interesting at some point (know, I'm terribly curious ^^).
By upgrading new components. You can achieve much more performance with faster RAM in dual channel mode. And by upgrading from an HDD to an SSD.
Otherwise you can overclock if the hardware allows it. But enjoy with caution. Because this makes the hardware hotter.
