USB is definitely mandatory.

The rest comes mainly to your references or what you want to use it for. But I would also consider an HDMI connection as very important.

Done bought.

Which ports are the most important on a laptop? And why?

At least 2x USB for mouse and external hard drive / USB stick.
Ethernet connection, because WLAN is not my friend.
Maybe another HDMI port to connect a projector.
Thunderbolt, that can actually do anything.

What ports do your laptops have?

1x HDMI
3x USB 3.0
1x Thunderbolt
1x Ethernet
1x charging plug.

I'm happy with those I have.

Nowadays, it is best to use several USB Type C ports, ideally Thunderbolt 3 (with eGPU support and charging function if you want it to be premium).

Although I'm a team DisplayPort, but an HDMI as a "standard" video output is also very convenient, there's just everywhere (projector for presentations, etc).

To be honest, I tend to find an ethernet connection a bit unnecessary, as rare as i.D.R. You can also replace it with a USB adapter. And if the laptop (only) is operated stationary, it does not matter anyway.

An SD card reader, I find extremely handy, cameras, 3D printers, etc. Everywhere you can find SD cards today. Having one integrated is therefore very convenient.

USB Type A is currently still handy (because most devices still have USB Type A), but hopefully it will soon be a thing of the past.

So my "perfect" laptop should have:

3x Thunderbolt 3 (eGPU support, charging function)

1x USB Type A (for compatibility reasons)

1x HDMI (for compatibility reasons)

SD card reader

(optionally one more DP for compatibility reasons)

[always of course always the latest version]

Magnetic power supply (connection) would also be great
