I would like to watch a series that is only available as a DVD box.
I also have a television and a laptop, but both have no drives.
Does it make more sense to buy a complete DVD player or is an external drive enough?
If you want to watch the whole thing on your television, I would take the DVD player, a normal drive is sufficient for the PC
Depends on where you want to watch the series.
On the TV → DVD player.
On the laptop → external drive.
Would get a DVD player.

I use a DVD drive + VLC player (free) & in the past I still used "DVD-Region - & - CSS-Free" under Windows-XP, e.g. For foreign DVDs which has not been running since Vista because of the driver model of Vista & newer! )
alternative: hollow a region-free DVD player with HDMI & possibly AV output
the drive takes up less space
