University how to write (digital / paper)?

What do you recommend for a technical course to write down? I imagine laptops difficult because of many formulas etc. Which devices to write with a pen like a Surface or iPad are best for this? Have only heard of the 2 devices so far but is there anything else like that? A normal Windows PC is also available.

Personally, I find paper much more pleasant:
- It always works. No empty battery, no technical problems, etc.
- It's very easy: take a pen and off you go.
- It is much cheaper: college blocks are available from 40 cents for 60 sheets. An iPad costs 2,000 times as much
