My laptop is only 5 years old, but already has SSD and not so bad…
The problem is that I study architecture and work a lot with rendering programs… I need very good graphics cards…
Is it better to invest in an external graphics card? Would cost 600 euro with housing
A new laptop with the same graphics card would start only at 1600 euro…
Does anyone have experience with external graphics cards? And since I have no Thunderbolt connection I have to buy an adapter… Does that still work smoothly?
The graphics card is not really the most important thing right now.
More important are RAM and CPU. Of course, a nVidia can help you if the application works with CUDA.
Which programs are you? Just look at the system requirements and choose the laptop accordingly.
Does it have to be a laptop? A PC should be much cheaper. I do not know now if you also need the laptop in the lectures and / or tutorials.
I would suggest that too:
A powerful PC for the time-consuming work and the old Läppi only for the simple and mobile part use.
I think that a large monitor, or if necessary also a SmartTV, is more suitable for working than a small notebook display.
That's right. The problem is that I live in the city during the week, and on weekends I'm ashore… And there's a stand PC is not really the ideal solution… Although I would rather not have one…
Mh well my current laptop has a CPU 2.0 GHz with Turbo Boost to 3.1 GHz… Custom for the programs but 3.6 GHz CPU… Will probably not with the external graphics card
Unfortunately, no.
There are also certain data outputs on the notebook required. Then it is a very expensive undertaking and the Grakas can provide a maximum of 70% of the actual performance.
But maybe there's an alternative.
You buy a strong desktop PC "for the city" and when you drive "back to the country" you log in via remote maintenance in your "city PC".
That would almost be like sitting right in front of it.
It will (depending on the quality) but requires a mediocre Internet connection.
I like to use the program Teamviewer for proper maintenance purposes with my relatives.

This is free for private users. But it can also happen every now and then that the connection is simply interrupted. And an hour-long connection usually does not run smoothly in one go.
But you can also rent a powerful (virtual) Windows computer on the Internet.
The operation is completely done via streaming. There's no need for a strong computer on site. Theoretically, this can even be done by mobile phone.

Although this is not an extremely cheap solution, but 1600-2000 euro for a suitable notebook must first be applied.
And so you could with your current notebook simply "dial in" via the Internet.
I do not know the prices, but I think it makes sense to think about it at least once.
An external graphics card is a bad stopgap. If you then have to use an adapter, the performance is right in the basement.
You probably will not get around a new laptop. A desktop PC and then with access via TeamViewer (or similar) might also be a solution.
