Continue working unofficially for fun?

I'm a software developer and currently I have a project at work that I really enjoy.

In theory, could I leave work with my laptop (which we allow), finish my official working hours at this point and then just continue programming at home? Or is it not allowed to do that?

This means home office and must be discussed with your employer, e.g. Also because of data security.
