Save notebook battery (settings)?

I have the setting in my Asus notebook to save the battery during longer periods of mains operation. The battery is only charged to 60%. Now I have activated the mode when the notebook was already 84% charged. It doesn't load any further because the 60% has been reached.

Should I pull out the power plug and discharge the notebook to 60% first?

I have another question. If I frequently bring the notebook close to its performance limits, will that shorten its lifespan?

No, just leave it infected.

And don't worry too much about the battery. It lasts for a while and at some point it just has to be replaced. This is absolutely unproblematic with many devices.
