Windows XP Ethernet Connect to the Internet?

I recently bought an old IBM ThinkPad. Only the WLAN card is too old to connect and the Ethernet port is also defective. I bought an Ethernet to USB adapter and nothing. What can I do there?

All drivers installed? Is Windows XP SP3 on it? Does the browser just not work or does it generally not work? Which browser are you using? With XP you shouldn't really be on the Internet anymore.
