No, not mandatory. The Windows "Defender" is running… It does pretty much the same thing. Otherwise you will get a good, free protection if you are unsure because you are surfing the web on "dubious sites". For example "Avast!" - is free.
I always say no to Kaspersky, because this is very bad software that puts too much load on the computer and annoys you with popups that can't be switched off unless you complete an unnecessary registration.

The current engine of Windows 10 and 8.1 of the native Windows Defender has been at a level for two or three years that it sometimes has better detection rates than commercial third-party providers. These can only score with additional functions or more accessible user interfaces, but not with greater security.

If you do not want to spend any money, go to the Computerbild website and see under Download which free virus protection programs you can download. The advantage is that all programs are checked by the editors beforehand and only then released.
